WEB3 - METAVERSE EXPLORATION

Metaverses / web3

Art Director: Tobias McCullagh
Hi everyone!

After completing a 12-week course on NFTs and Metaverses at the University of Nicosia, I put my newfound knowledge into practice and created this virtual space for my sample portfolio.

Note: Best viewed in the old browser version of Decentraland. Just click the link above.

To move around, it's the W, A, S, D keys - like PC gaming. And move your mouse cursor to move your view. Pressing the V key will change your view between the first-person and third-person views

Metaverses are a network of 3D virtual worlds. They can be experienced by an unlimited number of users and are seen as a 3D internet where you can talk to friends, attend 3D music festivals, check out an art gallery, or shop, etc.

Metaverses are spaces where our digital and physical lives blend.

I was personally curious about whether metaverses could offer a new way for brands to reach consumers, especially amid COVID lockdowns.

This led me to learn 3D modelling as a means to up-skill on new tools in case the metaverse became a new environment for brands and advertisers to reach their market audiences. However, metaverses never became mainstream, but I kept that curiosity going for the next big thing to disrupt the ad industry - AI.

NFT WEARABLES I DESIGNED
While learning 3D modelling, I created NFT wearables for people’s avatars. I did make some sales, but I don’t think I made any profit - definitely an interesting exercise in learning something new.

My first wearable NFTs for the Sandbox metaverse.
I wanted add an element of fun - Watermelon Helmet and Inflatable Duck Ring.

Electro Centurion Helm - I wanted to have a bit of a challenge with a 3D object to wear, and came up with this

Hovering Head - Initially, it was just a hovering head; however, Decentraland reached out to me to say I needed hands and feet to properly emote, per the community guidelines.

A cartoon bomb head for people to wear.

A wearable for your avatar to look like a wind-up toy.

As I got a bit more involved in metaverses, I wondered whether brands would get involved in wearable NFTs. Hence, the wearable KFC bucket and Pringles can, as seen below.

SANDBOX EXPERIENCES:
Got to check out Snoop Dogg’s MetaMansion, a NFT Art Gallery and even a concert by DeadMau5 through the Sandbox metaverse.

DECENTRALAND EXPERIENCE:
Went around checking out how ads are making their way into metaverses, from the usual OOH placements to immersive experiences such as Heineken Silver Brewery. The Heineken brewery was interesting as they asked the metaverse public what the metaverse beer should taste like and brought it to life.

I even participated in a walkathon within the metaverse - a metathon. My avatar had to travel 40km virtually in the metaverse. It was to promote inclusivity for people who are differently-abled. The virtual world is free of physical limitations and societal stereotypes, yet it doesn’t allow people to represent their disability in their virtual identity.

An interesting concept from the ad agency AMV BBDO.
